I will be departing for San Diego in four days and I am woefully
unprepared. My bedroom in my childhood home is in shambles, still full
of half-unpacked boxes from my old place in Washington, DC. My clean and
dirty clothes lie sullenly together in a college-era cloth hamper, my
bed is scandalously naked with no sheets, and my shelves, dresser, desk
and floor are covered in maps and NEAR MINT books on Asian history,
international politics, and the history of the periodic table.1/3 full
bottles of Johnnie Walker Red Label and Tomatin Whisky stare at each
other across the room with lazy rivalry. Those drunks.

Instead
of preparing in any way for San Diego, I have been playing Diablo III,
listening to Spanish language training tapes, and watching old movies on
Netflix. I also have been going out to Chicago fairly often to throw
away money that may have one day served me well in my impoverished grad
school lifestyle. I am sure the far more responsible FutureTed (thanks
bud!) will be able to deal with the repercussions.
